Top Weekend Picks for July 12th-14th

I am writing to you from Bethany Beach, Delaware this week.  We are enjoying time with my family and having a little summer vacation.  Bethany Beach is a fabulous family seaside town, and not too far from Long Island.  I will do a write up of our vacation soon. That doesn't mean I'm not trying to keep up to date on all that is happening on the east end.  And on that note, here are my top picks for this weekend.

Friday, July 12-

  • 5:00pm- 12:00am- Jamesport Fire Department Carnival- George Young Community Center, 446 South Jamesport Avenue, Jamesport.  Rides, food, and games for all!  This is also taking place on Saturday from 5:00pm-12:00am.
  • 7:00pm- 9:00pm- Summer Concert Series by Riverhead Townscape- East End Arts Green, Peconic Riverfront, Downtown Riverhead.  This week is The Long Island Sound Chorus. Bring chairs and blankets.
Saturday, July 13-
  • 10:00am-11:30am- Pollock Family Drip Painting- Pollock-Krasner House, 830 Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton.  Children and adults can tour the home and studio of Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner, then families can make their own drip paintings.  Great for ages 4 and above.  Admission, tour and supplies included for $35. Register online.
  • 10:00am-6:00pm- 25th Anniversary Sweet Corn Festival- Both Harbes Family Farm in Mattituck and Harbes Western Farm in Jamesport.  Celebrate corn and all its uses, such as delicious food and a corn eating contest! This event also takes place Sunday.  For more information, click here.
  • 7:00pm -10:00pm- Hamptons Collegiate League All Star Game- Cochran Park, Peconic.  North Fork All Stars (North Fork Ospreys, Riverhead Tomcats, and Shelter Island Bucks) verse South Fork All Stars (Center Moriches Battlecats, Westhampton Aviators, Southampton Breakers, and Sag Harbor Whalers.)
  • 9:00pm- 10:00pm- Shelter Island Fireworks Display- Crescent Beach, Shore Road, Shelter Island. Fireworks begin at dusk.
Sunday, July 14-
  • 10:00am-3:00pm- BNL Summer Days-Brookhaven National Lab, William Floyd Parkway, County Road 46.  This is a bit of a drive, but these events seem like such a cool idea for those of you with budding scientists.  This Sunday's theme is Family Fun Day.  You can visit the Science Learning Center to learn about magnets, mirrors, and more.  Catch a fire safety show and see"Phenomenal Physics of Mr. Fish Show."  The summer days are free, first come, first served, and recommended for ages 10 and up.  Any visitors over 16 must bring a photo id.  Click here more more information.
  • 10:30am- 3:00- Long Island Steamers Public Run Day- Southaven Park, Brookhaven.  Another public run day!  Woo hoo!  Check them out!
  • 1:00pm-3:00pm- Williamsburg Comes to Quogue- Quogue Village Green, Quogue.  The Quogue Historical Society, with support from the Quogue Library, invites you to a lively afternoon to transport you back to daily life during the Revolutionary War. Roam the Quogue Village Green and Village Lane and meet the town crier, Benjamin Franklin; be inspired by the live military marching drills of the Third New York Regiment Long Island Companies 1775 as they perform a Reenactment of a Revolutionary War Encampment; join in the dancing to the tunes of Chart Guthrie’s period band; enjoy the live sheep and cow from the Cornell Cooperative Farm while you learn about cow milking, and hear the history of sheep shearing with the Long Island Livestock Company; stroll through a soldier’s sleeping tent and the outdoor colonial “kitchen” and learn about the tools used in daily life; take a horse drawn carriage ride with Quiet Time Shire.  This event is recommended for all ages, and is a suggested donation of $10.  For more information, click here.
Planning Ahead:  The circus is coming to town! The Cole Brothers Circus of the Stars is coming to the East End.  They will be in Center Moriches from July 15th-17th.  Performances will be at 5:00pm and 8:00pm daily and held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 313 Frowein Road next to the high school in Center Moriches.  Then July 22nd and July 23rd they will be visiting Southampton.  Performances will be 5:00pm and 8:00pm both days, and held on the Shinnecock PowWow Grounds off Montauk Highway in Southampton.  Finally, July 24th and July 25th they will be performing at 5:00pm and 8:00pm on the Greenport Polo Grounds, 400 Moores Lane off Route 25 in Greenport.  For coupons and to get tickets, visit their website here.
