Summer Reading

No more pencils, no more books???  I hope not!  Even though school is almost out for summer, it is time to...

The last week of school is finally here!  For parents, kids, and teachers alike, these last few days are met with a mix of emotions.  Whatever your summer plans are, we can all agree that it is important that children keep up their reading over the summer.  I don't think summer should be all skill and drill, kids are kids, and summer should be fun, BUT reading is fun!  Children that do not regularly read over the summer  suffer noticeable losses in their reading levels.  Reading should be fun and relaxing, whether it's done on the beach or at bed at night. Now is the time to teach, and model for, our children that reading is enjoyable.   Luckily for us, there are many local programs that support summer reading for all kids, ages 0-18.  This year New York libraries are advertising a "Dig Into Reading" themed program for preschool and elementary aged students, and "Beneath the Surface" for teens.  These programs include prizes and parties at the library.  They are a great way to get kids reading, and to participate in some community events.  Here are the details for our local libraries.

Montauk Library

• 3 different clubs: 1) Birth- Kindergarten 2) Kindergarten-6th grade 3) 7th-12th grades
• Begins this Friday, June 21st

East Hampton Library

• Dig Into Reading- ages 2 1/2 -grade 5
• Beneath the Surface- grades 6-12
• Began June 1st

Amagansett Library

• Begins July 6th

John Jermain Library (Sag Harbor)

• Ages 2-18
• Begins this Saturday, June 22nd

Hampton Library (Bridgehampton)

• Begins this Saturday, June 22nd

Rogers Memorial Library (Southampton)

• Kickoff is June 27th

Hampton Bays

• 3 different clubs 1) Birth- age 3- Cockle Shells 2) age 3-Kindergarten- Jennie Shells 3) Grades 1-5- Nautilus Shells
• Teens- Reading Underground
• Begins July 1st

Westhampton

• Ages birth- 5- Very Ready Reading Program begins June 26th
• Ages 5-12- Reading Ninjas begins June 26th
• Teens- What Lies Beneath the Surface begins June 24th

Riverhead

• Begins July 1st
